ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A Prisoner of War memorial at Ontario Beach Park was damaged after it was hit by a truck early Sunday morning.

Rochester police said a 72-year-old man from the town of Greece lost control of his vehicle on Lake Ave when he hit a light pole and a POW/MIA memorial inside the park. It happened just after 4 a.m.

The Rochester Fire Department was called to help free the man from the wreck. He was taken to the hospital with what police call non-life threatening injuries. The memorial has been part of Ontario Beach Park since 1992.

"Kind of a disbelief that someone could actually drive almost 50 yards over a curb then over another 12 inch curb into a memorial," said Don Amerose, The POW/MIA Marathon Team.

Police said the man isn't facing any charges. A group of veterans said they plan to replace the memorial before September 2016 for National POW/MIA Day.
