NORTHVILLE, N.Y. -- Those who spend the summer season around the Great Sacandaga Lake mark the unofficial end of summer with their yearly "Ring of Fire" event.
Every year, on the Sunday before Labor Day, people light bonfires around the lake as a close to the summer season. The Sport Island Pub and Restaurant in Northville also joined in with a fireworks show before the bonfires were lit. People taking part in the tradition say it's a chance for the community to come together and have a final celebration to wrap up the summer season.
"It's a pretty amazing experience, it's almost like you can navigate by the fires, and almost lights up the entire lake," said Giuseppi Lanzi, Sport Island Pub manager.
"It is as if there is a glow, of all little lightning bugs around the whole entire lake and it's just so surreal and so wonderful to experience," said Maria Tambasco, Amsterdam resident.
The Department of Environmental Conservation urged participants to be aware of the regulations for open fires, as the lack of rain has created a high fire danger.
