ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Day two of jury selection was Wednesday in the second-degree murder trial of Charlie Tan. The 19-year-old from Pittsford is accused of killing his father, Jim Tan, in the family home in February.
Prosecutors say Tan shot and killed his father between February 5 and February 9.
The defense claims the suspect, his brother and his mother withstood years of abuse at the hands of his father. According to 911 phone logs, sheriff’s deputies were called to the Tan’s home on Coach Side Lane nearly 20 times before the shooting.
Tan's friends and family have been supportive throughout. They raised thousands of dollars to help pay for some of Tan's legal fees.
"We're good friends of the family," David Testa, Tan family friend said Monday. "We love Charlie, and his family are just good people. We wanted to be here to show support. It's a difficult time for everybody."
The trial is expected to take three to four weeks.
Tan remains free on bail.
