ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Discount warehouse Costco Wholesale on Friday opened its first location in Western New York. It's part of the $177 million CityGate project off Westfall Road on the Rochester-Brighton border.
It's another option when it comes to bargain bulk shopping, with Costco providing 156,000 square feet of merchandise.
The membership warehouse includes products from electronics, clothing, household items, and fresh, prepared and packaged foods. There are representatives and samples in nearly every aisle. There's also a fueling station for members.
An annual Costco membership starts at $55.
"Costco has the best prices, the best bakery, meats and products. You always find different things every time you come," said Janet Abbott of Webster.
"I had heard it was a little bit more upscale and it appears to be that way; the food, I just took a stroll through there," said Brighton resident Darren Vogt.
"You can save when you have a big family and stuff like that. The way the economy is today people have to buy bulk stuff to live," said Kathleen Krumbein of Rochester.
Costco is the anchor store for the 45-acre CityGate project along the Erie Canal. It will include other retailers, a hotel and apartments overlooking the canal.
