SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- More than 10 years ago, the storefronts of the Pike Block in downtown Syracuse were vacant, unused spaces.

"We had incredibly successful areas like Armory Square, Hanover Square, Clinton Square, but everyone's lasting impression was Salina Street, particularly when you drove down the 300 Block of South Salina Street," said Merike Treier, Downtown Committee of Syracuse executive director.

Treier said the downtown committee was able to secure the property, which allowed for development that includes new restaurants, retail stores, businesses and apartments. There's even more to come.

"Right now, we've got $340 million of investment activity underway. A lot that is attributed to increased residential options within our downtown community," said Treier

Nikita Jankowski and her husband chose to live downtown for many reasons, including convenience.

"It's within walking distance of where we work. We work right downtown too. It's just amazing to be able to walk downtown, live downtown, eat downtown, play downtown and just enjoy downtown," said Jankowski.

Downtown has come a long way but there's still more work to be done, including the possibility of adding a full-service grocery store.

Shay Black has lived in Syracuse, visits downtown often and shared what she would like to see.

"More ethnic food because I know a lot of places did close down," said Jackson.

Treier said the plan to focus on getting more people to live downtown because they'll utilize these establishments more. Approximately 3,100 people currently live here. She said they'll also focus on trying to get more employers and office workers downtown as well. With the continued investment, she's confident if it's built, they will come.

The Downtown Committee said it is also focusing attention on the Central Business District. They'd eventually like to see all parts of the city connect and be walkable.
