ALBANY, N.Y. -- Jaushi'ir Weaver, 16, and Rashad Quityne, 18, were charged in connection with a homicide in Albany this week.

We spoke over the phone with a former Bishop Maginn High School student who knew Weaver. It came as a shock to him because he said Weaver had so much to live for.

Weaver entered the Albany court room on Wednesday in a yellow jumpsuit.

Its a sad change from the uniform he wore when crowds cheered him on. Weaver was number 20 on the Bishop Maginn football team, a standout player.

A former player on the team told us over the phone Weaver's goal was to play college football and he had the potential to go far. Now he's charged with murder, accused of shooting Courtney Yates in the head early Tuesday morning. Yates was 26.

Yates was pronounced dead at the scene and two other men were transported to Albany Medical Center.

"And to think of him dying in that way is senseless, senseless," said Courtney's mom, Patricia Yates.

Yates' mom spoke out at the courthouse on Wednesday afternoon, still reminding herself that he isn't coming back.

"Not only was he a parent, but he was a person and the killing was not justified, it's never justified,' she said.

Yates still doesn't know how to explain her son's death to his six children, and the people who saw Weaver on the field are having a hard time believing the person in the yellow uniform is the same as the kid in the blue.

Bishop Maginn's only comment was that a student from Bishop Maginn was charged in connection with this week's homicide in Albany.

Albany Police say the shooting wasn't random.
