CAMILLUS, N.Y. -- The former Camillus Cutlery site has been empty for a number of years. Mayor Patricia Butler-Rhoades said residents are eager to find out what's going on with the site.
"If I had nickel for every time I was asked about the Cutlery property, I'd be able to take a cruise," said Butler-Rhoades.
The site has been vacant since the plant closed in 2007. Sweet Spot Development plans to turn what will be known as Camillus Mills into a mixed-use site with residential, commercial, medical and retail space.
They had hoped to have some activity by now, but a major fire there in 2013 put things on hold for a bit.
Developer Tom Blair said it's currently in the leasing stage. They have submitted a historic registry application and are now waiting on building recommendations from the National Park Service.
In a statement Blair said:
"We’re very pleased that the project has been qualified as a historic project. We’re hopeful that the final detailed approvals will arrive this summer so that we can move on to the next phase.”
That next phase includes cleaning, site preparation, engineering, grading and construction
Main Street in the village has had its ups and downs. There was a fire earlier this year at the Green Gate Inn. They are planning to rebuild and the village once again has a gas station.
Butler-Rhoades said Camillus Mills is key to the village's comeback.
"I expect to see more foot traffic, more local traffic at restaurants and yes at the gas station. It'll be wonderful to have that thriving in the village again," said Butler-Rhoades.
The village has secured some main street grants for businesses fix their storefronts. Despite the challenges, the mayor says the future looks bright here.
