MENDON, N.Y. β€” The three National Guard soldiers killed in last week's military helicopter crash in Mendon are being remembered in the Rochester area and around the country.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The UH-60 Black Hawk went down last Wednesday evening in a farm field in Mendon.

Chief warrant officers Steven Skoda, Christian Koch, and Daniel Prial all died in the crash.

A memorial has been set up in honor of all three men at the site where they lost their lives.

The memorial features three American flags flying at half staff and is lit with a flood light. At the center, small flags surround the silhouette of a soldier kneeling in front of a cross.

One of the soldiers is also being honored by a fellow officer in Philadelphia. A portrait of Chief Warrant Officer Christian Koch joins the distinguished list of men and women who've died in the line of duty that Officer Jonny Castro has painted.

Koch's portrait can be found on Castro's Facebook page where it has been widely shared.

Castro is a forensic composite artist and a military veteran. He's been painting portraits of fallen troops, officers, and deputies since 2015.

Castro says it's all about sharing the stories of these men and women. He's gifted several portraits to families and actually spoke with Koch's wife after she saw the portrait on social media.

He plans to ship her the painting on Tuesday with the hope that she'll receive it before her husband's funeral.

"I feel like it was an important story. Number one: because three of our service members were killed in the same accident. But also, it's just...to get their story told. To get the story, how he's been serving for, you know, 20 years and he was a combat veteran, two tours, two different wars. So, it was definitely important to make sure the story was told," said Castro.

Koch, who was also a member of the state police would have turned 40 years-old on Monday. A GoFundMe account for his family has raised more than $120,000.
