FAIRPORT, N.Y. — Fairport school leadership has issued a statement about Black Lives Matter in school following a Spectrum News story.

One family claimed teachers were encouraged to wear BLM t-shirts in the classroom.

Superintendent Brett Provenzano published a letter on the district's website. He said in the letter that this was not the case.

Provenzano said in part:

"I can tell you that we believe unequivocally that Black lives matter. Eradicating racism and ensuring the safety and well-being of Black people are human rights issues.

"However, as a global organization, 'Black Lives Matter' has connections to political platforms that seek legislation and policy reform on a number of topics.

"As we treat other similarly affiliated organizations, it is not the district’s role to influence our student’s political views or beliefs."

— Brett Provenzano, Superintendent, Fairport Central School District

Provenzano also added that the school district's policy expects teachers and staff will not engage in political expression at the workplace.

The district says it will continue to behave in a way that demonstrates Black lives matter.
