The gates at Frontier Field have opened to the public for the first time this season, but it’s not for baseball.
Loudspeakers blared as dozens of people came out for dinner on the baseball diamond.
“It’s a chance for our fans to come back to the place that they love and enjoy some of the food that they love here at the ballpark,” said Dan Mason, Red Wings General Manager.
The Red Wings tells Spectrum News reservations for this weekend's events sold out in a matter of hours for the opportunity to have baseball concessions on the field.
“We came out to support the Red Wings first and foremost because this is a community team and we have come to some games, so we miss that opportunity to be doing this activity in the summer,” said Becky Kieffer of East Rochester.
Andy Behe of Webster said it was a unique experience being down on the field, especially sitting behind home plate for dinner.
While most people said they were from the Rochester area, one family drove for an hour for the unique experience.
“This stadium has one of our favorite foods in Minor League Baseball, even better than Buffalo. Don’t tell them I said that, but no, the atmosphere is just fun,” said Jessica Penders of West Seneca.
While it’s a fun experience for families, it’s also helping Frontier Field and the Red Wings.
“For us, it’s a chance to generate some revenue at a time when we’ve been unable to really do anything of that nature in the last 3 months…and it’s always great to see a lot of the fans that we see here on a nightly bases as well,” said Mason.
The Red Wings said it’s likely more dinner on the diamond events will take place next week.
