A celebration was held yesterday for a local senior who made headlines 20 years ago.

Nasmil Campusano is graduating from the Rochester City School District's Bilingual Language and Literacy Academy.

In 2000, Campusano was separated from her conjoined twin during a more than seven-hour surgery, the first surgery of its kind in New Jersey.

For the first seven months of her life, Campusano had been conjoined at the breastbone and abdomen, sharing just one liver with her sister.

Yesterday, Campusano's teachers delivered her cap and gown to her, just a day after her 21st birthday.

"The type of surgery that she had only has 60 percent survival for one of the twins," said Jacqueline Senecal, Program Director of the Bilingual Language and Literacy Academy. "So for her and her sister to be here and experiencing this is a huge accomplishment not only for them but also for the family."
