A church that’s been around since 1911 in Henrietta is closing its doors soon.
Good Shepherd Church's Saturday mass was one of its final services before it official closes Monday.
“You know we’ve built a good community and a lot of friends and a lot of help here, so it’s pretty sad," Matthew Pellegrini, Henrietta said.
"I’m going to miss having it so close by, but that’s not going to deter us from continuing to come," added Lindsay Crocetti, Henrietta.
Karol Zgonce has been attending service at Good Shepherd for 50 years, but said it’s necessary that the church closes.
“I think they need to combine the three churches and eventually have one, and you have to move forward with what has to be done,” she said.
Parish officials said the church's closure has been in the works for years— even before all three catholic churches on East Henrietta Road reorganized to form Saint Marianne Cope Parish in 2012.
"It had to do with really stewarding our resources in a very positive way, and so we try to do the best we can and of course all churches are losing their memberships, but it wasn’t just that, it was really resources," Sister Sheila Stevenson, St. Marianne Cope Parish Pastoral Administrator said.
Since Good Shepherd is closing, members will attend services at the two other churches in the parish: Guardian Angels and Saint Joseph's— which are just a few miles down the road.
"This weekend is a celebration," Stevenson added. "Though our hearts are heavy because we’re losing this space which has been very important, but we are celebrating all that have been and we’re delighted that we’ve been here for 108 years."
Good Shepherd will hold its final prayer service in the church Monday, October 21 at 6 p.m.
