PENFIELD, N.Y. — A multifaceted apartment building for seniors has finally opened in Penfield.

A ribbon was cut Tuesday for the Gardens at Penfield Square.

The building offers 114 apartments for seniors wishing to live independently, and those who need supportive housing and assisted living.

The affordable housing complex sits next to a green space that will host special events and farmer's markets.

"Too often, our vulnerable seniors are forced to live in unsafe conditions or are burdened with unaffordable rents," Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. "With this significant investment, we are helping 114 households in Monroe County achieve housing security in a high-quality home that provides the types of support services to truly meet their health and wellness needs."

The apartments are located at the former Wickham Farms location off of Fairport Nine Mile Point Road and are meant to be affordable to households earning at or below 60% of the area median income.
