ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The first case of monkeypox is being reported in Monroe County.
Health officials did not reveal any details about the infected patient but did say the risk to the general public is low.
Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that typically does not cause serious illness but can lead to hospitalization or even death in some cases. Older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and children under the age of 8 are at higher risk of experiencing severe symptoms from the virus.
People who have become infected in the current outbreak report being in close physical contact with someone who has the virus, such as through sexual activity. It is less common but still possible to contract monkeypox through respiratory droplets from prolonged face-to-face contact or contact with contaminated items such as clothing, towels or bedding, according to the health department.
Health officials are recommending individuals at higher risk of contracting the virus or experiencing severe symptoms take steps to protect themselves. They should ask sexual partners about any rashes or other symptoms consistent with the monkeypox virus and avoid skin-to-skin contact with someone who has those symptoms.
Symptoms of monkeypox include:
- Rashes, bumps or blisters
- Fever and headaches
- Muscle aches
- Swollen lymph nodes.
People experiencing any of these symptoms should stay home and contact their health care provider.
