ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Justin Bieber is on break from his tour due to a medical issue. The pop star announced last week that he is suffering from paralysis on one side of his face.

The condition is called Ramsay Hunt syndrome. It's a rare neurological disorder that can be triggered by a shingles outbreak.

Symptoms are similar to Bell's palsy.

They include weakness in one side of the face, trouble with hearing, pain in and around the ear and ringing in the ear.

If you think you have Ramsay Hunt syndrome or Bell's palsy, doctors urge you to get treatment as soon as possible.

The sooner you get treatment, they say, the greater the odds of recovery.

"Either calling your primary or heading to the emergency room would both be reasonable options,” Rochester Regional Health neurologist Dr. John Cullen said. “For both Ramsey Hunt and Bell's palsy, people do much better if they receive steroids and anti-viral medications. If you get these two treatments, and usually there's a time window within the first 72 hours of when symptoms start, that's when these mediations work."

Bieber says he is doing facial exercises to help, but isn't sure how long it will take him to recover.

He was in the midst of a world tour, which made a stop in Buffalo last month.
