The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says a portion of the county jail was shut down, deep cleaned, and tested after an inmate tested positive and was treated for Legionnaires' disease while in custody.
Legionnaires' is a form of pneumonia caused by a certain type of bacteria, which is often found in water supplies, and can be inhaled through droplets.
The inmate was taken to the hospital in early July. The sheriff's office says the inmate's cell tested positive for the bacteria. According to the sheriff, no other inmates or staff have tested positive for Legionnaires', and the plumbing in the original cell was replaced and the area disinfected.
The inmate was treated and released back to the jail.
