A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows an alarming rise in superbugs. The bacterial infections are concerning because they are resistant to antibiotics.
The report shows that drug-resistant superbugs are now infecting 2.8 million people annually and causing more than 35,000 deaths each year.
"It's a problem that affects every one of us. It's not due to a single factor, it's due to many factors," said Dr. Emil Lesho, an infectious disease expert at Rochester General Hospital. “Once we define the problem, that goes a long way in coming up with solutions.”
Doctors say there has been some progress made since the last report with a decrease in deaths because of preventative measures.
According to medical experts, people can lessen their risk by insisting that doctors not prescribe an antibiotic unless they’re diagnosed with a bacterial infection. They also recommend avoiding products that contain antibiotics or antibacterial agents.
