ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Beneath the busy streets and skyscrapers of cities and towns around the country lie hidden urban legends. They include everything from ghosts haunting historic buildings to hidden tunnels and secret societies.

Rochester has the story of the White Lady's Castle. It's the tale of a ghost who is carrying the heart-wrenching story of loss and vengeance and continues to haunt Durand Eastman Park.

The castle wall at Durand Eastman Park was once part of the Three Lakes Pavilion — a wooden structure from the early 1900s located in the middle of a Spanish fort-style wall.

"Sadly, this wooden structure did not survive the great depression," said Jenni Lynn of Rochester Candlelight Ghost Tours. "And then throughout the years, kids would hang out in the abandoned building, and one did set fire to it, destroying that upper wooden structure, leaving just that beautiful castle."

The Lady in White is thought to be the unsettled ghost of a mourning mother whose daughter went missing while walking down to the lake. She assigns responsibility to men for the tragedy.

"For the rest of her life, she looked for her daughter's body, but to no avail, could not find her," said Jenni Lynn. "So even in death, she keeps up the search."

When she encounters men, it is believed she enjoys instilling fear in them — even a ghost hunter is not exempt from her influence.

"So we had a group of three ghost hunters come here once, two ladies and a gentleman. They walk up the castle steps there, enjoying the view from up top when they hear a disturbance in the lake just off to the side," said Jenni Lynn. "They don't see anything. But shortly thereafter, they hear a woman's voice scream, 'get out.' The ladies run down the steps. They run to the car. They're safe. The gentleman, however, was not as fortunate. Something grabbed the back of his shirt collar and began dragging him towards the castle wall."

It is said that in a desperate struggle, he managed to break free and escape.

For decades, people have associated the Lady in White with the castle wall, making Durand Eastman Park a hub for those seeking encounters with the supernatural.

Many versions of this tale have been passed down through the years. There is no historical proof that the Lady in White ever existed. The castle brings tourists from all over the world, so much so that it has become a historical landmark.
