RPCHESTER, N.Y. — Franklin High School students were greeted by some smooth jazz at school on Thursday.

Grammy-nominated musician Jimmie Highsmith Jr. was playing in the halls as students headed to class.

The greeting was put on by Fathers Initiating Restorative Engagement or FIRE. The organization is a group of dads who reach out to students as positive role models during arrival, dismissal and lunch.

Organizers say they wanted to send students off on holiday on a good note.

"To be here with these kids today is just special to me," said Highsmith. "I'm a father. I'm a grandfather. I know what it's like to want to be supported by somebody. My father was in my life, he died two years ago. For almost 50 years I had that. So I wanted to give to other kids... be there to support them and show them the way to deal with this world."

"Music is just so soothing and I don't even know if Jimmie knows this, but I am a musician," said RCSD Superintendent Lesli Myers-Small. "I started on violin and play bassoon. Music was always a sense of solace for me and I could just really rest myself."

FIRE is currently looking for more dads to volunteer. You can sign up by emailing FIRE@RCSDk12.org or by calling 585-262-8362.
