The Hudson Valley region of our state offers a variety of hidden gems that offer great opportunities for sightseeing. In this edition of Explore New York, we head to Bannerman Castle where you'll find more than just breathtaking views.

"People can really come here to experience the history that is lying in their backyard and look at some of the beautiful surroundings and really admire the architecture that a man with no background in architecture or engineering drew up and was able to design these buildings himself," said Jesse Izzo, island steward.

"It's the only island we know of that has a castle on it anywhere in the Hudson Valley and the nature of Mr. Bannerman's business is also fascinating to a lot of people," said Wesley Gottlock, tour coordinator. "It's got a certain mystique about it. There are many legends about the island over the years. I think that lends to the intrigue and mystique about it.

"People really talk about just the whole atmosphere," said Izzo. "The idea of a Scottish immigrant to come over here as a young boy and build the American dream for himself and made this beautiful island with all of these beautiful views, beautiful landscapes, beautiful structures. It's really quite impressive altogether. People admire the history of the Hudson Valley. A lot of people forget what history is right here in our backyard."

"If you're not into history, come on the third Sunday. Bring your family, bring a picnic and you can just stroll around and relax and listen to the live music. We've really broadened them menu over the last couple of years. So there's something for everybody," said Gottlock.

"The gardens are beautiful. We have a really dedicated crew that comes out here every Wednesday and they really dedicate their time and get in there, get dirty, and make these gardens the way that they look," said Izzo.

"People just love the photography, the vistas, and the angles. We run a few special photography tours in the year as well," said Gottlock.

"People always find it breathtaking because the views you can't recreate them anywhere else in the valley," said Izzo.

"The view from the terrace here in front of the house is just absolutely spectacular. This is the only island that has castles on it as far as we know. Quite a distance from here. The view from Mr. Bannerman's residence is quite remarkable and still is still quite remarkable today," said Gottlock.

"Pictures don't do it justice. You have to come here and you have to really see it for yourself, the beautiful ruins that are here. It's a great time for the whole family," said Izzo.
