The Rochester City School District superintendent and members of the district's RocRestorative team launched the Restorative H.U.B. at the Northwest Junior High at Douglass campus on Tuesday.

H.U.B. stands for healing, understanding and belonging. The space is meant to build community, navigate conflict and restore relationships.

Some of the practices of the hub include:

  • Mediation and restorative training for students, adults and the community
  • Student re-engagement
  • Teacher wellness activities, including yoga
  • Proactive outreach for restorative work
  • Meeting and facilitation for community partners
  • Collaborative space for RocRestorative and community partners

Superintendent Dr. Carmine Peluso says research shows students perform better when they have a connection to a caring adult.

"Wrapping our arms around our kids and telling them that we love them, that's the best way that we can keep them engaged in schools and not be disengaged," said Peluso.

The superintendent says the RocRestorative team includes more than a dozen counselors, coaches and community partners.
