BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Students from low-income families will have a chance to get the full college experience at no cost.

ESL is giving more than $1 million to the Brockport Foundation.

The Fannie Barrier Williams Scholars program will provide four-year scholarships to students with unmet financial needs.

Approximately 30 students will receive these awards each year to supplement state and federal programs and cover out-of-pocket expenses, like room-and-board.

"We also know that when students live on campus, they have the opportunity to learn in environment that helps them outside of the classroom," said SUNY Brockport President Heidi Macpherson. "They meet more people, they get more relationships, they can be in a living-learning community that supports their success. We want the students to stay on campus to have that structured approach to their learning outside of the classroom."

There are several requirements for a student to be eligible, including:

  • You must be accepted as an incoming freshman  and enrolled in a degree program at SUNY Brockport
  • Students must be from the six-county ESL region, which includes Monroe, Orleans, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario and Wayne counties.
  • Students must have a high school GPA of at least 87.
  • You must be identified as low income with demonstrated unmet financial need
  • Students can not already be receiving a traditional merit/academic scholarship from SUNY Brockport
  • They must be a student most at risk of not persisting to graduation, with priority given to students of color
