Local colleges are reacting to the news that the Trump administration is reversing course on a travel rule that would've forced many international students to leave the country if all their classes were online this upcoming semester.
St. John Fisher College said in a statement: "In and out of the classroom, these students contribute to the fabric of the campuses where they study and the communities in which those colleges reside. Fisher is committed to supporting our international students."
RIT President David Munson also issued a statement, saying in part: "This directive needlessly caused great anxiety and concern for our international students, so we are thrilled that they no longer need to bear this burden. We look forward to welcoming them back when our fall semester begins August 19."
RIT has more than 2,000 international students.
The University of Rochester also issued a statement, saying through a spokesman: "Today, we are thrilled for both our international students who contribute so much to the life of the University, and for the state of global education. So many individuals from all over the country came together to respond to this crisis, and we are overcoming it together."
