Rochester Teachers Association President Adam Urbanski says there is hope for some of the 95 teachers laid off due to Rochester City School District’s ongoing budget crisis.
He's expecting a number of them to be recalled due to the number of resignations and midyear retirements within the district.
Since the announcement that cuts would be made, the number of teachers impacted has dwindled. The original number expected to be laid off was 168. Of those, 95 were laid off, but 150 were displaced from their positions with many sent to different schools mid-year.
While some teachers are deciding to retire, they are not willing to make concessions, according to a survey conducted by the teachers union.
Of those who responded, 60 percent would not give up their benefits. The remainder said they'd consider it, but only if the district made significant reductions at the central office and if the teachers saved would not just be laid off later.
Next week, the RTA, New York State United Teachers, advocacy groups and parents will head to Albany to lobby for additional funds. This, to help close the budget gap, prevent further teachers from being cut down the line, and recall the ones that have already been laid off.
