Firefighters tackled both ice and fire early Thursday morning as high wind caused a fire to spread rapidly at an apartment building in East Bloomfield.

The fire began just after midnight at the Valley Motel, which is now apartments, on Routes 5 and 20.

Ontario County sheriff’s deputies went door-to-door to get people out. No residents were injured, one firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Joseph Parco, IV and Jennifer Austin are among those who escaped the fire, along with their infant son. They sat in their car watching the smoke clear.

"We have the baby in our lap, and we have each other," said Parco. "Everyone is safe and that's where we began to accept that it's OK to lose everything that's burning down right now because we have each other."

"The big thing is the people," said Tom Baker, who offered residents shelter inside his business, The Furniture Doctor, during the fire. "The building's just a building. It's basically stuff. The thing is they walked away and we're thankful," said

They say all of the units are destroyed, leaving at least 10 people out of their homes. The Red Cross is assisting those affected with temporary shelter at the Super 8 Motel.

More than a dozen fire departments were called to help and the weather conditions made it difficult for crews.

Deputies say it’s too early to know what caused the fire, but they are investigating.
