CANANDAIGA, N.Y. — The Rochester man accused of sexually abusing a child in the city of Canandaigua Saturday, was arraigned on sex abuse charges and remains in the Ontario County Jail.

The Canandaigua police chief credits a concerned citizen for help in this arrest. Police say she witnessed the alleged abuse and immediately called police.

The Canandaigua Police Department says 51-year-old David Schutz is accused of inappropriate sexual contact with a child under the age of 11.

Investigators said the incident happened around 5 p.m. Saturday at a restaurant on South Main Street in Canandaigua.

Canandaigua Police Chief Stephen Hedworth said a woman noticed Schutz acting strange when he entered the restaurant so she kept an eye on him and the child and then says she witnessed the abuse. The woman immediately called police. The police chief said this is an example of someone seeing something and doing something to help.

Schutz was arrested early Sunday morning. He's charged with first-degree sex abuse.

Officers are not saying what the relationship was between the victim and the suspect to protect the victim and their family.

Schutz was arraigned and entered a not guilty plea.
