ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Rochester police say man is dead after a shooting near the lake early Sunday morning.

Police were called to Lake and Beach Avenues around 1 a.m. for the report of shots fired. When they got to the scene, they found 23-year-old Shaquan McMillan of Rochester lying in the road with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Police say they believe he was shot in a parking lot in the area and ran then out on to Beach Avenue, where he collapsed.

A man and woman said they did their best to help McMillan before first responders arrived.

"We just came down here to try to have a good time, get something to eat, and then we heard gunshots,” Jake Simmons and Shiba Cummingham recalled. “Then we saw two security guards so we walked over here and we saw a guy, on the ground, bleeding. I took my shirt off and applied pressure to the wound. I tried to administer CPR and checked his pulse, it was real faint. Next thing you know security came out and next thing you know they said he was dead, said he was gone."

Police say the investigation is ongoing. They're asking anyone with information to call 911.
