GENESEO N.Y. -- It was a whirlwind weekend for players on the Geneseo varsity football team as several teammates were dismissed following alleged drug violations at last Friday night's game against Boliver-Richburg.
The Village of Geneseo Police Department has conducted a full investigation in collaboration with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.
A concerned parent, who requested anonymity, whose son was involved in the incident said it was a player that had made a wrong decision, he adds the situation stems from a student who obtained drugs and distributed them amongst teammates before the game.
“We’re all pretty much on the same pretty banged-up shape. We're all pretty upset and frustrated with the whole situation,” said team captain Kyle MacDonald.
MacDonald said devastation doesn’t describe the situation. He says he knew something was off in how the players reacted to the drugs.
After the game, he said, his teammates came forward, and the senior, heading off to college next year, worries his chances could negatively be impacted.
“That means some tough talks with recruiters about letting them know that I wasn’t a part of the situation.”
According to school Superintendent Tim Hays, multiple student-athletes are in serious violation of district code of conduct policies and as well as the New York Public High School Athletic Association Standards.
“I understand they have to do their part, but they need to inform the parents besides the players, and we were never informed either way,” said Tim MacDonald, a parent.
Kyle McDonald said the team made an agreement in the spring that makes junior varsity players unable to fill varsity player’s position.
Including last Friday’s games, the team is forced to forfeit the rest of the season.
“I definitely think that people are going to look at, not just myself but all the players differently for how we performed on Friday and that’s frustrating,” said McDonald.
"The Geneseo Central School District is committed to upholding the highest standards of excellence in all of our academic, extra-curricular and athletic programs," Hayes wrote in a statement.
Hayes says the school's junior varsity and modified football teams will continue their seasons as scheduled.
