ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County is reporting its largest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases since January.
There were 790 new cases reported on Tuesday. Of those, 541 positive results came from home tests.
The daily average in the county has now climbed to 483 cases, up from 455.
Nearly 170 people are being treated for the virus in regional hospitals.
The recent increase in cases comes as the URMC reached a milestone in the fight against the virus.
Strong Memorial Hospital has now discharged 5,000 COVID-19 patients since the pandemic started.
The area's two largest hospital systems are speaking about the ongoing spike in COVID cases.
University of Rochester Medical Center and Rochester Regional Health hospitals are both treating more and more patients by the day.
RRH Chief Medical Officer Dr. Robert Mayo says a majority of the patients are not admitted with COVID, rather they are hospitalized for other reasons, and contract COVID later on.
Officials say the new omicron subvariant has caused a less severe illness for most. Officials say the rising number of COVID cases still impacts hospitals.
Many facilities in the region are still experiencing staffing shortages.
