ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Spectrum News continues to look back at the past year and how things changed because of the pandemic.

One industry that experienced a large impact is public transportation.

Spectrum News spoke to Regional Transit Service CEO Bill Carpenter, who says his company had to adapt to keep both employees and customers safe.

In the beginning, that meant keeping workers who were 70 and older at home, and having others work overtime to cover routes and sanitize buses.

RTS also eliminated fare boxes and limited capacity.

Carpenter says the biggest thing was listening to the guidance.

"Follow the science and make adjustments as necessary to make sure that our employees and customers stay safe and be the system that is safe frequent, reliable and connected for the community,” he said.

Carpenter says the new focus for RTS has been to get everyone who faces a transportation hurdle to vaccination sites.
