ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Regional Health started vaccinating people 75 and older at Unity Hospital Tuesday with a drive-thru vaccination clinic.

It’s set up next to the hospital’s drive-thru testing area.

People get their shot and then wait about 15 to 30 minutes to make sure they do not have a reaction.

Jerry Batog, 90, of Greece, was first in line to get his vaccine Tuesday morning.

“I think it’s terrific,” said Batog. “I have no reactions. I even got a sticker. I was a good boy. I didn’t even cry.”

Batog said he got the call to get his shot Monday and he is scheduled to get his second dose the second week of February.

Everyone has to be scheduled to get a vaccine and should expect a call from their provider before they can do so. There was a little confusion when the drive-thru first kicked off as some people showed up who were not on the list to receive the vaccine.

RRH Director of Nursing Stephanie Dodd said more people will be scheduled in the coming weeks.

“I think the next couple of weeks we’ll probably see similar clinics to this. We’re really trying to stick to a scheduling process and really try to expand who we can reach with that scheduling process just to keep things safe for all the patients,” said Dodd.

Dodd says this week alone, the health system plans to administer 900 vaccines to patients through their clinics at Unity, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, the Jerome Center in Batavia, and the Riedman Health Center.

RRH is only focused on the 75 and older population getting vaccinated right now.

The health system will be participating in community clinics with the Finger Lakes Vaccine Hub to get public workers vaccinated as well.
