Months have passed since people have been allowed in movie theaters.
But phase one of New York’s coronavirus recovery plan allows drive-in theaters to reopen.
“I’m very thankful that we’re able to get open now and be one of the first businesses that can give people something to do,” said Paul Dean, owner of Vintage Drive-In Theater.
The drive-in theater has been closed longer than normal; the theater usually opens in April for the season, but has been forced to stay closed because of COVID-19.
People in Avon have waited patiently, but are now excited it’s reopening next week.
“I think that’s a great idea because everyone is going to be in their own vehicles,” said Bill Shaw of Avon.
Anthony Ventura of Avon added, “There’s only so many Netflix nights you can do, and even though you’re still in the car, it’s still just getting you out, but it’s a way that you can get out and still be kind of safe.”
Although it is a drive-in theater, social distancing measures will be in place.
“You know we’ll expect people to keep six feet or more between them, the parking lots will be doubled spaced, so we’re not going to fill every single space,” said Owner Paul Dean.
Dean tells Spectrum News the concession stand will be open and people can pick up their food from outside; orders can also be placed through an app.
As for the movies, some reserved spots will be available online, but people will have to pay when they arrive, and it’s suggested you get there early.
Dean added, “We expect big crowds, so we expect to sell out pretty much every night.”
Vintage Drive-In Theater is set to reopen Thursday, May 21.
Since there are no new releases, the first movies will be Trolls, Jumanji, Invisible Man, and Bad Boys for Life.
