One by one, cars came to Concordia Lutheran Church Saturday afternoon. Those in line were coming to the Community Hygiene Bank.

"Many don't have cash assistance or limited cash assistance, so we were discovering that people don't have basic hygiene items that was starting to cause a very basic health issue," said Scarlett Aeckerle, program coordinator with the Community Hygiene Bank Outreach ministry.

Items such as toothpaste, soap and feminine hygiene products were handed out throughout the afternoon. Volunteers wanted to do more than just give products to those in need.

"We want to make sure that we're engaging with the people, the customers that we're seeing. Even from six feet away, you can have a conversation and smile at anyone," said Conner Kreider, a volunteer.

One of those who came to pick up items was Kim Underwood. She says many seniors in the community need these items.

"With the quarantine, they're not able to get out of their homes, or to get to the stores. And if they do get to the stores, the supplies are very limited as to what they get it's a great benefit for them," said Underwood.

The Community Hygiene Bank usually gives out items every other month. Thanks to a grant from the United Way, they were able to have an event in April that included non-perishable items. Those with the Community Hygiene Bank are hoping they can turn a negative into a positive.

"There really is a spirit of you know we're going to figure this out, we're going to get through it together, which is going to help each other out, so I guess there's a bit of a silver lining to this ominous cloud," said Aeckerle.
