If there is one appointment people rarely skip — it's a trip to the hair salon or the barber!

Cosmetology took a hit when salons and service businesses were forced to shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

By now, you've probably seen the jokes circulating on social media about how our real hair color will soon burst forth!

Twitter feeds are full of men entrusting their wives with a pair of clippers. Our own meteorologist Michael Gouldrick is one of them.

“Everybody wants to look like themselves. They want to feel good about themselves and they want to feel confident and emotionally I think this is really hitting hard for a lot of people," said Susanne Mauro, co-owner of Sooz Salon on Monroe Avenue in Brighton.

Susanne likens her past battle with cancer to our current fight against this virus.

“It really does mirror that time because your life is at a standstill from what you knew it to be," said Mauro.

Susanne has been keeping in touch with her clients, offering suggestions to weather this stay at home mandate.

Her quarantine tips include:

  •  Avoiding boxed coloring
  •  Shampoo and condition your hair often and try a hair mask
  •  Use a root touch up powder, if you have it on hand

“Please be patient. We will be back and we are so excited to see everyone and to most of all chat with everyone," said Mauro.

In the meantime, a lit tree outside the salon serves as a beacon of hope.

“We wanted not only to do something to create hope for ourselves and our team but for our community," said Mauro.
