A festival that has been a staple in Wayne County for decades is now just a memory.

This week, the organizers of Palmyra Canaltown Days announced the event has been canceled indefinitely.

On Tuesday, the festival's board of directors met to assess the status of the event and the outlook for this year's event. However, the festival's website says due to multiple reasons, it is not in a position to be successful this year.

The board cited things such as inadequate vendor response, increasing costs, difficulty recruiting new volunteers, inadequate sponsorships, changing rules and regulations and a shortage of available parade units in its decision. The board also decided to dissolve the corporation that organizes the event.

A statement on the festival website said in part:

"Due to the many changes that the festival has had to endure over the years, it is no longer the historical festival that it was originally established to be. Over the years it has lost various activities that were significant parts of our festival and today is not the festival that it once was."

Palmyra Canaltown Days has been running for more than 50 years and had grown to include many different types of vendors, bands, pony rides, a large car show, a 5k run/walk, Civil War reenactors, antiques, grand parade and a barn dance sponsored by the Wayne County Fair Association.
