There was a major announcement from philanthropist Tom Golisano and the University of Rochester Medical Center on Thursday.

Golisano says he is matching a $50 million contribution by the university to create the new Golisano Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Institute.

"We really want to do something about health care for people with developmental disabilities," said Golisano. "We also want to do research to see if we could make life easier for people who may end up in a situation."

URMC officials say this is the largest gift ever given to the U of R and brings Golisano's total contributions to nearly $100 million. The Paychex founder says this project is especially important to him because he has a son with disabilities.

The U of R says the facility will be built somewhere on the URMC campus. The university says this announcement will positively impact the lives and well-being of thousands of traditionally underserved families in the Rochester community and beyond.
