ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Lollypop Farm has started a new classroom pet program. Teachers can now adopt a mouse for free.

Lollypop Farm has hundreds of domesticated mice up for adoption and now available to be your new classroom pet at school. They’ll help you get set up and ready for the kids to start taking care of them.

What You Need To Know

  • Lollypop Farm has started a new classroom pet program, where teachers can now adopt a mouse for free.

  • An education team member from Lollypop Farm will bring your new classroom pet mouse with their full setup, including a tank, water bottle, food dish, and enough bedding and food to get you started

  • It includes digital download of printable documents, including mouse care 101, daily care tracker, weekend care sign-up and enrichment craft sheets

These pocket pets could use a new home and your classroom just might be the perfect place to see them play, grow and eat.

Lollypop’s Nick Kohner and a dedicated team of small animal care volunteers are ready to help get your class set up with a mouse, tank, water bottle, dish, some bedding and starter food.

“Kids learning empathy at an early age, especially towards animals and one another is really important,” Nick Kohner from Lollypop Farm. “So that is why we want to make this an educational thing. We don’t want to just give out a classroom pet and here you go. They are a lot like us. They have a lot of the same needs. They need food and water. They need to be taken care of. We really want to teach the kids that.”

Lollypop’s been caring for hundreds of mice for months following a Humane Society investigation into an animal hoarding situation.

Where there are two mice there can quickly be four, eight and so on. Lollypop’s been working hard to get them adopted.

The new mouse classroom program is available for students K-12 who would like to care for one. It is open to districts in Monroe and surrounding counties.

In addition to a free mouse and supplies there’s a free download of printable documents including mouse care 101, a daily tracker, weekend care sign up and enrichment craft ideas.
