One Rochester group is calling on the state for better regulation of nursing homes.

The Elder Justice Committee of Metro Justice wants the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act approved by the legislature.

It sets staffing guidelines and also manages unannounced nursing home inspections by the state health department.

The plan would revoke the Nursing Home Immunity Law, which Metro Justice claims has gone too far.

"That law that is in effect is going way beyond the intended scope and what it's doing is providing a shield for the very worst of the owners of care facilities who for a long time have placed the financial bottom line over and above quality patient care," Elder Justice Committe member Lori Parker said.
