Along West Church Street in Fairport sits the Potter House. The home was built in 1858 and was given to the village of Fairport in 1943.

"This is like a landmark structure in the village of Fairport and the people here deserve to have this. This is part of our history in Fairport," said Joseph DeMeis, a Fairport resident.

As a way to keep that history alive, village officials held a meeting with the public Thursday. The goal was to take input on what the space should be used for in the future.

"We're really trying to understand what our community feels about our property, how they would like to see it used as well as balancing the fiscal responsibility of village government and ownership of this property," said Julie Domartz, Fairport village mayor.

Residents brainstormed ideas at the meeting. Everything was up for discussion. They talked about selling the property, renovating the space, and even rebuilding.

"We're getting feedback from a lot of different backgrounds and how people perceive the building," said Bryan White, Fairport village manager.

Village officials and many residents agreed they would like to see the space saved and not used for commercial use.

"I would really like to see the house preserved. Unfortunately in our modern-day and age, if it's old, tear it down, put up new and we forget our history and where we came from," said DeMeis.

The village is hosting another meeting to discuss Saturday at 2 p.m.
