For many, the corner of East and Alexander is known for its nightlife. But just blocks away, Super City Events is trying to change the narrative with a sober bar crawl.

“There’s an inclusion factor that’s important, but we’re also really trying to rebrand or give people a different look at what East and Alex looks like,” said Super City Events Founder Jason Hilton.

Things kicked off at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center with faux cocktails. Lavender Lady Blue was a hit drink of the night. It’s made with homemade simple syrup, lavender and blue barriers.

Christine Root struggled with alcoholism for 20 years, but has been sober since 2015.

“It feels fantastic. Didn’t know it could be so good. My life has changed in a lot of ways,” Root said.

She’s glad there’s such an inclusive event in her community.

“It’s a chance to go out and see other restaurants and places, and meet people without having to drink,” she said.

There were many attending like Darla and David Bragg who have never struggled with addiction. Instead, they just wanted to do something new with their Friday night.

“It’s Friday night, we worked all week, let’s go drink. And it just ends up being the same thing week after week after week. So let’s change it up, try something new,” David said.

The crawl had six stops, including axe throwing at Axes and Ales and ski ball at the Riot Room, and trivia at Pop Roc Cereal Bar and Comic Book Shop.

“I serve breakfast at 8 o’clock in the morning. We’ve got cereal, waffles, bacon; we’re having all kinds of fun. Locals served breakfast,” Hilton said. “So there’s more opportunity in East and Alex than meets the eye.”
