The whole community is mourning the loss of Rochester Police Officer Manny Ortiz, including his neighborhood.

Sara Wurzer says Rochester Police Officer Manny Ortiz was the ideal neighbor.

“He was the one that was always out, he was always talking to people, waving. His yard was always pristine,” Wurzer said.

And when she learned he died Saturday night, she wanted to find a way to honor him.

“I wanted to do something, I didn’t know what I could do to show the family we were supporting them," Wurzer said. "I said let’s go out and do lightbulbs, and from there it grew.”

She began buying them for her neighbors, and passing them out.

“To see that people in the community are willing to come together at a time like this and support law enforcement, to support the police officers and family of Manny, it’s so warm and so welcoming,” Wurzer said.

Justin Jenner has only been in the neighborhood a month, but he didn’t hesitate to take a light.

“It shows support in the community and neighborhood, and that yeah we lost somebody, but you’re not alone,” Jenner said.

Home Depot and Walmart even donated blue bulbs to Wurzer for her cause, as well as neighbors chipping in. Jenner is blown away by the solidarity.

“It’s a tough time, but I think it’s nice to know the community can come together and really show support,” Jenner said.

And Wurzer hopes the movement in her neighborhood reaches Ortiz’ loved ones.

“It was a tragedy, it’s sad. And that’s when you really want to come out and support the community, and you want to show everyone, especially the family, that we’re here for them,” Wurzer said.
