A memorial has been set up for the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash in the South Wedge neighborhood.

Friends and family members set out candles and a photo of Tommy Jones, 60, in the area of Comfort Street and South Avenue, where he was hit by a vehicle just before 10 p.m. Monday. Police said he was hit while crossing the street.

One witness said Jones was in the pedestrian crosswalk there, an area where vehicles are supposed to stop for pedestrians, according to state law.

Jones was taken to the hospital, where he later died.  Police are still looking for the person responsible.

One neighbor heard the crash and saw a red caravan driving away, while another says these hit-and-run crashes need to stop.

“We heard him get hit down here, and we heard the car speed off, and we watched the car pass us up that way," said Andrew Buzzard of Rochester. "When it hit him, it must have done something to the vehicle, because the vehicle was making noises.”

“It happens too often, hit-and-run, hit-and-run, hit-and-run — and a lot of time no one gets arrested, or knows who’s done it,” said Lonnie Everett of Rochester.

Police ask anyone with information to call 911.
