Rochester police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash in the South Wedge.

The incident happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday in the area of Comfort Street and South Avenue.

Police said Tommy Jones, 60, of Rochester was hit by a vehicle that then left the scene. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Investigators do not yet have a description of the vehicle. However, an acquaintance of Jones, who was nearby when the accident happened, says he heard the crash and saw a red colored caravan speed away.

"We heard him get hit down here, and we heard the car speed off and we watched the car pass us up that way. When it hit him, it must have done something to the vehicle because the vehicle was making noises," Andrew Buzzard said.

The Rochester Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is currently investigating and anyone with information is asked to call 911.
