ROCHESTER, N.Y. — For anyone who's ever wanted to get up close and personal with giraffes, and even feed them, they'll soon have their chance. Seneca Park Zoo is set to open its new Animals of the Savanna expansion next month.
It's the second major project completed for Phase One of the zoo's Master Plan Expansion. The five-acre exhibit will feature dozens of species from the African Savanna.
Monroe County Parks Director Larry Staub says the variety of species at the zoo puts it on par with some of the nation's largest zoos.
"People love seeing the large African land mammals, and bringing a giraffe, bringing in zebra, bringing an ostrich and moving our rhino down to this huge exhibit, it's four times the size of what he has now at our zoo," Staub said. "People are going to really enjoy it.
The expansion took just over a year to construct and is part of a $13.5 million investment.
It opens September 13th.
