SYRACUSE N.Y-- The best pickle Brooklyn Pickle owner Ken Sniper says he ever had, was when he visited family down in Brooklyn. That's where he first got the idea to pair Brooklyn pickles with overstuffed deli sandwiches.
It's a philosophy the Brooklyn Pickle still goes by 40 years later. While the business has expanded several times over the years , owner Ken Sniper says some things just haven't changed.
"It's really a local product, the sandwich is kind of a local tradition for a large sandwich," said Sniper.
It all began in 1975 when Sniper opened the first store on Burnet Avenue, operating in a 13-foot wide storefront. Just two years later, a second store opened, this time on the city's Westside. Over the years, both stores have undergone numerous renovations and expansions to keep up the growing demand of the business.
"I started off at the small building by the road. And it's really grown a lot. We didn't have air conditioning in the building," explained Carol Pierce, an employee of 30 years.
But since then, the Brooklyn Pickle has come a long way. to In fact, month they'll be celebrating their 40th anniversary. Something Sniper says is a major accomplishment.
"I'm proud that I'm still here 40 years later. Not many people survive in the restaurant business 40 years. So that’s one thing I'm very proud of," said Sniper.
"Ken has been doing it for 40 years so I think once your someplace for 40 years, and have had that success people do think of you are a staple in the community," added Brooklyn Pickle Vice President Craig Kowadla.
As for what's next, Sniper says he won't rule out another expansion or renovation for either store. But says the Brooklyn Pickle isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
"Brooklyn pickle will be around. I can guarantee you the Brooklyn pickle will be around 10 years. It’s an institution and it will stay an institution."
An institution that so many continue to enjoy to this day.
Brooklyn Pickle will be celebrating their anniversary this Thursday and Friday with discount prices, raffles and other contests. For more information, click here.
