As the mercury rises outside, you'll be trying to keep things cool inside. If you don't have central air, you do have some other options.

"You have two options," Home Depot department supervisor Natalie Roccario said. "The first is a window air conditioner that you can place in any room in your home and then we have portable air conditioners that can be placed in any room of your home and moveable. So that if you wanted to cool one section of your house during the day and then move it while you slept it gives you that option also."

If you choose portable, it may be a little more maintenance and work.

"The portable ones are usually a combination of AC and dehumidifier," Roccario said. "It takes about two pints of water out of the air an hour, so you typically have to empty the pan probably every three hours or some do come with a model that you can attach a hose and have it automatically drained into some sort of a container."

Before you go shopping for a window unit, you'll need to get out our measuring tape.

"They have what we call fans on the side that expand to the width of your window," Roccario said. "It's just really important that before you come in to buy anything, that you measure the width and the height of the opening of the window so that you can make sure you get the proper fit."

After choosing what kind of air conditioning unit to purchase, how big should it be? Well that depends on how big the room you're trying to cool is.

"A room that's approximately 10 by 15 foot, you would use a 5,000 BTU air conditioner, 5 to 6,000," Roccario said. "You go larger, you need more BTUs in order to cool the room. The other consideration you have to think of is in the kitchen. Kitchens you have to typically up the BTUs by 4,000."

One way to try and keep cool without running the air conditioner is by drawing the blinds while you're not at home. Also, there are smart units that link to your cell phone so you can turn it on ahead of time of your arrival.
