Asa Johnson made a name for himself in Western New York as an all-state pitcher at Frewsburg before taking the bump for St. Bonaventure. However, it's Johnson's recent work that you're probably most familiar with. He was the videographer for now Miami Dolphin QB Tua Tagovailoa's personal pro day and ultimately showing he deserved to be taken fifth overall.
What You Need To Know
- Johnson starred at Frewsburgh and St. Bonaventure
- He turned his passion for playing sports into covering them
- He shot Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's pro day
"To his credit he crushed it. He made every single throw that he needed. I think he showed what he needed to show. For me to be able to showcase that, capture, and send it off to all the teams, I was really happy to do it and glad it worked out," Johnson says.
Let's rewind five years. Johnson had packed away his Bonnies cap and gown, but wasn't exactly sure what was next. That's when Bona offered him a gig as their first ever digital media specialist.
"Pretty much self-taught through YouTube university on that stuff, and just kind of took it and ran with it. It snowballed into something I never thought it would have," he recalls.
That snowball started as a few snowflakes in the form of emails. Little did he know he had created an avalanche sized network.
"I would basically send out just harmless emails to different universities, not asking for jobs, just asking for feedback. I would send them some of my work and be like 'hey what are your thoughts on this and if I worked for you what would you give me as critiques to work on," he adds.
Asa kept grinding, spending countless hours honing his craft and shining a spotlight on Bona athletics. A year later, his growing portfolio and one of those emails collided at the intersection of opportunity. Johnson became a videographer for Vanderbilt where his passion and talent captured the Commodores national baseball champions and the way Asa explains it shows why he's excelled so quickly.
"It's more than just the games. You've been on teams; the camaraderie and just the way they form those relationship, I want to document that. So 20 years down the road, there's a reunion and they have all this stuff and they can go 'oh, I didn't know they caught that, but that's really, really cool," he says.
Asa's skill set and work ethic keep parlaying his opportunities to higher levels.
"I was able to go to Kansas City with the [Tennessee] Titans this past year and Baltimore as well. Just being in an NFL playoff atmosphere, I had never experienced that before. Making sure I take a mental picture to remember it," he adds.
Creating memories one mental or physical snapshot at a time.
