CLEVELAND — Carolyn Rodecker said she believes you’re never too old to exercise.

“I believe that as long as you can move, move,” she said. “To the degree that you are able, keep moving.”

Rodecker said this is why she enjoys being a fitness instructor for the SilverSneakers Program at Middleburg Heights Community Center.

“I have been a fitness instructor since the 1980s,” she said. “I love working with SilverSneakers. I'm excited because as we grow older, there's an image, and the image is when you get older, you have to stop doing things. That’s not true.”

She said the various exercises during the class work on agility, quick movement and more.

“If we work on these things, we are likely to decrease greatly the risk of falling, the risk of injury to our knees, to our hips, to our ankles, to our wrists and less likely to have issues with hypertension,” she said.

She said the program is just one way for seniors to stay healthy and make new friends.

“They love what they're doing,” she said. “I have heard from SilverSneakers [members] that they feel better than they have ever felt. They move a lot easier. Their sugar is under control. Their heart rate, their whole cardiovascular system, is in better shape.”
