Onondaga County is working with Kinney Drugs to vaccinate more seniors. The county has created a system called "ONList" that will pre-register up to 10,000 seniors.
Then, as Kinney Drug pharmacies receive their supply of vaccines each week, they will set aside some of that supply for people on the list. Seniors who are signed up will be randomly chosen.
County Executive Ryan McMahon says demand is still outpacing supply, and he realizes appointments are hard to come by.
As the county gets more vaccinations, other sites, such as the State Fairgrounds, will also pull from "ONList" to help vaccinate seniors.
"This is just the most emotional part of this whole process with the pandemic. Emotional because people are just so happy when they get the shot. A sense of relief that they get their lives back. When they get that sencond shot, talking about seeing their grandkids for the first time," said McMahon on Wednesday. "That is a rewarding experience, espcially for our health department who has frankly been through hell during this pandemic. But the problem is the anxiety to get the shot weighs on all of us who field these calls."
The link for "ONList" will go up Thursday on Kinney's website. This week the county will focus on building up the list and next week, they hope to start vaccinating seniors.
The county is also looking to partner with Syracuse University to have students call seniors who may need help signing up.
Kinney is also hosting a clinic on Sunday for anyone eligible for a first-round vaccination. The county will hold its vaccination clinic Friday. The links for both clinics will be posted on Thursday.
