WOLCOTT, N.Y. -- The owner of a Wayne County biomedical research company announced plans to form a new company to grow and produce medical marijuana.
Scott Marshall, who owns and operates Marshall BioResources in Wolcott, New York announced the formation of Butler Evergreen. Marshall said he intends to apply for a license under New York's Compassionate Care Act to grow marijuana for the treatment of cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and other illnesses.
Butler Evergreen, which will be housed in the former Electromark facility in Wolcott, has partnered with experts including Dr. Luke Peppone from the University of Rochester Medical Center. New York will grant a total of five medical marijuana licenses by January 2016.
Butler Evergreen said if approved, it plans to open dispensary locations in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and Binghamton.
"The law limits the amount of companies able to produce the produce the medicine to five and it requires the companies be vertically integrated handling growing, processing and distribution of the medicine," said Mark Doherty of MedCann Advisors.
The company is expected to create 100 jobs in Wayne County.
